The Fair Credit Reporting Act, the law that governs credit reporting agencies, states that anyone who furnishes information to a credit reporting agency cannot report information it knows or consciously avoids knowing is inaccurate. So you have a couple of choices for disputing a mistake: either contact the credit reporting agency or go directly to the lender. You should always file a dispute with the credit reporting agency, but also consider whether you should go directly to the creditor too. Here are some guidelines for choosing which approach to take.

Make sure to monitor your credit report, you can get free copies once a year but if you are at all suspicious about anything you may want to have a monitoring service. If there is an account that you do not recognize, make sure to contact the creditor right away and get specific information on that account and seek removal from your report.
